Review & Description

Reissued with a new preface for the centennial.

Along with Pound, Eliot, and Joyce, Edward Estlin Cummings is one of the leading American poets who revolutionized literary expression in the twentieth century. He was also a Cubist painter, a champion of the little man, a brilliant conversationalist, a romantic idealist, a famous irrational curmudgeon, and husband to three of the most beautiful women of his time. This critical biography merges these various selves into one fascinating life story, many chapters of which could be mistaken for a great romantic novel. In following Cummings's development as a poet, it also includes a large number of previously unpublished poems and drawings. Read more

Review & Description

The stranger-than-fiction life story of the author of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo His three novels are violent, terrifying, brilliantly written, and have sold millions of copies around the world, but Stieg Larrson was not able to witness their international success. Since he died in 2004 the author of the Millennium trilogy has received international fame with dizzying speed, but when one looks a little deeper at the man behind these phenomenal novels, it is clear that his life would be remembered as truly extraordinary even had his trilogy never been published. Larrson was a workaholic: a political activist, photographer, graphic designer, a respected journalist, and the editor of numerous science fiction magazines. At night, to relax, he wrote crime novels. By the time of his death at the age of 50 he had completed The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Next, the third book featuring the hypnotic Lisbeth Salander. His relentless personality and political convictions did not make life easy. He famously took on some dangerous neo-Nazi opponents, making for much speculation that his enemies, who often told him that his days were numbered, may have a hand in his premature demise. This difficult man, brilliant and multifaceted, is the subject of a penetrating biography and a celebration of his remarkable life and books. The stranger-than-fiction life story of the author of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo His three novels are violent, terrifying, brilliantly written, and have sold millions of copies around the world, but Stieg Larrson was not able to witness their international success. Malcolm X Biography: The Life and Death of Malcolm X (Kindle Edition)
By James Evide

Review & Description

On February 21, 1965, in Manhattan's Audubon Ballroom, Malcolm X began to speak to a meeting of the Organization of Afro-American Unity when a disturbance broke out in the crowd of 400.

A man yelled, "Nigger! Get your hand outta my pocket!"

As Malcolm X and his bodyguards moved to quiet the disturbance, a man rushed forward and shot him in the chest with a sawed-off shotgun. Two other men charged the stage and fired handguns, hitting him 16 times. Furious onlookers caught and beat one of the assassins as the others fled the ballroom. Malcolm X was pronounced dead at 3:30 p.m., shortly after he arrived at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.

Daydreams & Diaries (Kindle Edition)

Review & Description

For Taylor Black, that Friday night was like any other in her senior year in high school. A quick dip in the shower then off to see her girlfriends and boyfriend Jeff. Just another Friday night in a small Florida town until she blacked out in the shower and her mom rushed her to the emergency room and another life: one of brain scans and surgeries, chemotherapy, 60 Minutes, hospitals and hospice. Something that always happened to someone else happened to her and to her family as well.

Taylor kept a diary through her ordeal as she tried to live as normal a life as possible with brain cancer. Daydreams and Diaries details the roller-coaster ride which is cancer and how Taylor coped as a patient and grew as a person, changing from an insecure high school girl to a courageous young woman.

Her spirit attracted the cameras of CBS and the attention of Ed Bradley who called her "amazing." Twenty seven million people saw her on 60 Minutes, but CBS couldn't tell Taylor's whole story for she was far more than a cancer patient; she was a beloved daughter, sister and friend who showed, as a noted author once wrote: "grace under pressure".

Taylor's father, Tim Black, brings a father's memories of Taylor at different points in her life, helping to complete the portrait of a remarkable young woman who was the inspiration for so many. Read more

THE AMERICAN INDIAN WARS (Hardcover)

THE AMERICAN INDIAN WARS
THE AMERICAN INDIAN WARS (Hardcover)
By JOHN; JENNISON, KEITH TEBBEL

Review & Description

Before Europeans came to the vast region that is now the United States, over one million Native Americans inhabited the land, from the Northern ice wastes to the Southern swamps, from the Eastern forests to the Western plains. After four centuries of nearly continuous warfare, fewer than four hundred thousand remained. This is the dramatic, heartrending account of their survival...against all odds. John Tebbel, who is one-sixteenth Indian, the descendant of an historic Michigan family, worked for major newspapers and magazines until he became chairman of the Journalism Department at New York University, where he divided his time between teaching and writing. Keith Jennison was a Canadian, born in Winnipeg, who spent most of his life in Vermont and New York City, where he was a legendary figure in book publishing, as well as an author of books, mostly about Vermont. Starting as a book salesman for Harcourt, Brace in 1935, he held major positions in several New York houses, and at one time headed his own. With John Tebbel, he helped found the Graduate Institute of Book Publishing at NYU, the first of its kind in the country. Read more

Bill & Dave: How Hewlett and Packard Built the World's Greatest Company (Hardcover)

Bill & Dave: How Hewlett and Packard Built the World's Greatest Company
Bill & Dave: How Hewlett and Packard Built the World's Greatest Company (Hardcover)
By Michael S. Malone

Review & Description

The definitive history of Hewlett-Packard and its legendary founders, based on unprecedented access to private archives

This is the most authoritative version ever of the most famous start-up story in business history. In 1938, working out of a small garage in Palo Alto, California, two young Stanford graduates named Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard built their first product, an audio oscillator. It was the start not only of a legendary company but of an entire way of life in Silicon Valley—and, ultimately, our modern digital age.

Others have written about the rise of Hewlett-Packard, including Packard himself in a bestselling memoir. But acclaimed journalist Michael S. Malone is the first to get the full story, based on unlimited and exclusive access to corporate and private archives, along with hundreds of employee interviews.

Malone draws on his new material to show how some of the most influential products of our time were invented, and how a culture of innovation led HP to unparalleled success for decades. He also shows what was really behind the groundbreaking management philosophy—“the HP Way”—that put people ahead of products or profits.

There have been attempts in recent years to discredit the HP Way as soft and outdated. But Malone argues that the HP Way was a hard-nosed business philosophy that combined simple objectives, trust in employees to make the right choices, and ruthless self-appraisal. It created an innovative and ferociously competitive company—arguably the world’s greatest company.

This business adventure story will be perfect for entrepreneurs, young managers, and students, not to mention the tens of thousands of current and former HP employees. Read more

NOTA AUTORA

Sinatra:: The Artist and the Man (Hardcover)

Sinatra:: The Artist and the Man
Sinatra:: The Artist and the Man (Hardcover)
By John Lahr

Review & Description

"I am a symmetrical man, almost to a fault," Frank Sinatra once said. It is a peculiar statement, because Sinatra is precisely asymmetrical. How to reconcile the enchanting crooner and the explosive bully? What to make of the smooth tones of his voice and the rough edges of his persona? To find the true correspondence between the public and the private Sinatra, the artist and the man, is no easy task. John Lahr, drama critic for The New Yorker and one of the finest writers on the performing arts working today, has done just this in Sinatra: The Artist and the Man

Lahr traces the trajectory of the "solitary latchkey kid" from Hoboken, New Jersey, into the stratosphere of fame. Sinatra kept company with presidents and mobsters; he kept up the front of a happy family life for as long as he could and then took up with the most desired women in the world--Ava Gardner, Lauren Bacall, Anita Ekberg, Marilyn Monroe, and many, many more. He led a life of manic gregariousness, yet spoke to the romance and loneliness of the "wee small hours of the morning." He desperately needed to exist within the gaze of the audience but at the same time would express aloofness toward his fans, saying he was happiest "when I'm onstage all by myself with an orchestra and nobody to bug me."

Sinatra: The Artist and the Man also examines the miracle of Sinatra's return--much of what is marvelous about Sinatra today is that we know who he is at all, so far did he fall in the late forties. Sinatra came back with a vengeance as Angelo Maggio in From Here to Eternity, a heartfelt and brilliantly comic performance that won him an Academy Award. At the same time, he reclaimed control of the recording studio and, with the help of an ingenious arranger named Nelson Riddle, perfected the swinging sound of his mature years. Sinatra then proceeded to build a media empire that has been the standard by which all other stars have measured their success. The artist and the man: Sinatra epitomized control and he raged uncontrollably, destroying friendships, love affairs, and a plate-glass window or two; he won fans around the world across three generations, created an unparalleled body of recorded work, and almost single-handedly invented the postwar American swagger and "the image," Lahr writes, "of perfect individualism."

Sinatra's life and art happen to be extremely well documented in photographs--from Weegee's hilarious pictures of bobby-soxer hysteria at New York's Paramount Theatre to William Read Woodfield's definitive and rare "Chairman of the Board" images. Sinatra: The Artist and the Man collects one hundred of the best photographs ever taken of Sinatra (some never before published)--representing his film work, the special intensity of his recording sessions, and the many swinging nights of this complex and fascinating man. Review & Description

Welcome Boomers! In the 1950s, 1960s & 1970s, wherever you were, whatever radio station you listened to and whichever DJs brought you the music, you loved it, lived it, or lambasted it while it was happenin', but we can look back at it now with a lopsided grin and a knowing wink. We were THERE.

Coast to coast, border to border, DJs, disk jockeys, deejays, announcers, jocks - whatever term you remember them by - were once our energetic keepers of the music world. Blast from Your Past! (TM) Rock & Roll Radio DJs: the First Five Years 1954-1959 brings 'em back!

Dedicated to Wolfman Jack, with many tidbits, fond anecdotes and quips from those who worked with him - BFYP: the First Five Years invites you to relive the memories of the malt shop, and enjoy the moment ... again.

Hanging out with our friends, a tinny transistor radio blaring, our favorite DJ told us what songs to listen to, what records to buy, what to dance to, and listened to us when we called in to ask why. As a social network of unparalleled music-lover unity, live radio is quickly fading in today's automated programming.

This $3.99 ebook price is an introductory teaser! On July 1, 2011 the price will increase to $4.99. That's also when you should look forward to the full-throttle print version -- Blast from Your Past! Rock & Roll Radio DJs who ROCKED Your World! 1954 ~ 1979, Vol. I, coming soon. The First Five Years peeks behind the mic of 15 Rock & Roll DJs who were there in the beginning. The 25-year print version introduces you to 26 more, and continues the journeys of many of the first 15.

Large and small radio markets throughout the country - WIBG/Philly, WINS/NY, KCBQ/San Diego, WOKY/Milwaukee, KIOA/Des Moines, KAFY/Bakersfield (CA), WCYN/Cynthiana (KY) and many more - provide backdrops that will amuse and amaze. Read behind-the-microphone stories from Cousin Bruce Morrow, Ron Riley, "Louie, Louie" producer Ken Chase (Mike Korgan), Dr. Don Rose, "Frosty" (Forrest) Mitchell, and more!

Complete in its own right, BFYP: the First Five Years even includes one of the three bands interviewed who attribute a significant amount of their success to a friendly DJ.

Foreword by Lonnie Napier, Wolfman Jack's 25-year friend and business VP; Special Introduction by Bill Gardner, DJ extraordinaire. Read more

Review & Description

This work is aimed at ages 9-12. Magical heroes like Harry Potter, Spiderman, or Catwoman provide plenty of entertainment for kids, but in real life heroes are made of sterner stuff than celluloid fantasies. In this inspiring collection of biographies - covering historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln and Helen Keller as well as contemporary figures such as Toni Morrison and Michael Jordan - critically acclaimed writer and psychologist Sandra McLeod Humphrey teaches young people that heroes were once ordinary people whose strength of character helped them to achieve extraordinary things. Starting with only their dreams, they worked hard and overcame obstacles to make their dreams come true. Some overcame physical handicaps, others psychological barriers like extreme shyness or feelings of inferiority; some faced racial discrimination or educational disadvantage, others financial burdens. In spite of these frustrations and discouragements, all of these people discovered in themselves the patience, perseverance, and determination to pursue their dreams beyond every obstacle. The message is clear: no matter who you are or where you come from, you too can accomplish extraordinary things, as long as you dare to dream and never, never, never give up! Read more

Review & Description

The definitive story of Hollywood's most famous couple

He was a tough-guy Welshman softened by the affections of a breathtakingly beautiful woman; she was a modern-day Cleopatra madly in love with her own Mark Antony. For nearly a quarter of a century, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were Hollywood royalty, and their fiery romance—often called "the marriage of the century"—was the most notorious, publicized, and celebrated love affair of its day.

For the first time, Vanity Fair contributing editor Sam Kashner and acclaimed biographer Nancy Schoenberger tell the complete story of this larger-than-life couple, showing how their romance and two marriages commanded the attention of the world. Also for the first time, in exclusive access given to the authors, Elizabeth Taylor herself gives never-revealed details and firsthand accounts of her life with Burton.

Drawing upon brand-new information and interviews—and on Burton's private, passionate, and heartbreaking letters to Taylor—Furious Love sheds new light on the movies, the sex, the scandal, the fame, the brawls, the booze, the bitter separations, and, of course, the fabled jewels. It offers an intimate glimpse into Elizabeth and Richard's privileged world and their elite circle of friends, among them Princess Grace, Montgomery Clift, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Peter O'Toole, Michael Caine, Marlon Brando, Rex Harrison, Mike Nichols, Laurence Olivier, Robert Kennedy, Tennessee Williams, NoËl Coward, John Huston, Ava Gardner, the Rothschilds, Maria Callas, and Aristotle Onassis. It provides an entertaining, eye-opening look at their films, their wildly lucrative reign in Europe and in Hollywood—and the price they paid for their extravagant lives.

Shocking and unsparing in its honesty, Furious Love explores the very public marriage of "Liz and Dick" as well as the private struggles of Elizabeth and Richard, including Le Scandale, their affair on the set of the notorious epic Cleopatra that earned them condemnation from the Vatican; Burton's hardscrabble youth in Wales; the crippling alcoholism that nearly destroyed his career and contributed to his early death; the medical issues that plagued both him and Elizabeth; and the failed aspirations and shame that haunted him throughout their relationship. As Kashner and Schoenberger illuminate the events and choices that shaped this illustrious couple's story, they demonstrate how the legendary pair presaged America's changing attitudes toward sex, marriage, morality, and celebrity. Yet ultimately, as the authors show, Elizabeth and Richard shared something priceless beyond the drama: enduring love.

Addictive and entertaining, Furious Love is more than a celebrity biography; it's an honest yet sympathetic portrait of a man, a woman, and a passion that shocked and mesmerized the world.

Review & Description

In this richly detailed memoir, Juliette de Bairacli Levy, one of the founders of American herbalism offers us a rare documentary. It is at once an herbal, a travel book and a compendium of Gypsy lore and Gypsy ways. Juliette gives us river winds, strange characters in the streets by day, rats scurrying by at night, and legions of cockroaches in the apartments, against whose window the blossoms of apple and pear trees toss, even in the great city's cement heart.
